Program Description

"The leaders of the future are ex-debaters" (Forbes, 2014). For those who commit to speech and debate, it offers a lifetime of benefits. Debate teaches how to persuade, how to present clearly and how to connect with an audience. These skills are exactly what future employers will be looking for in their young employees. That comfort of speaking in front of others is useful in so many aspects of life, from interviews to school presentations to discussions in seminars. Beyond the skills built while students are speaking, the preparation for competition teaches critical thinking and research skills as well. It tests and builds that ability by enabling students to see both sides of the issue. Our Speech & Debate afterschool program is evolving this term to equip your child with even more effective communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills. Public Speaking Club (for Ages 6-8): we've designed a journey to take your child from understanding the audience to confidently delivering a speech. As the weeks progress, we delve deeper into the structure of a speech, content development, and the effective use of language and non-verbal communication. The program involves step-by-step learning, fun and interactive speech games, and strategic lessons to conquer stage fright. Students will work on delivering 2-3 speech presentations throughout the term, across various interesting topics of their choice. Our Debate Club, designed for students aged 9-14 years, offers ample opportunities to participate in a diverse array of significant topics and issues. It empowers students to deliver compelling speeches, express themselves with confidence, and persuade others effectively. In Term 3, we will kick off each cycle with a week-long upskilling workshop to equip students with the necessary debating skills, followed by a focused week of debate preparation leading up to the debate week where students can put their newly acquired skills into practice. We are dedicated to providing personalised guidance through individual advice, tips, and one-on-one coach-student conferencing, ensuring tailored support for each participant's debating journey. First-time debaters are also welcomed to join our beginner debating workshop, where we provide comprehensive support and guidance to ensure a seamless transition into the world of debating. Our dedicated instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of debate, offering valuable tips, techniques and feedback.
