Program Description

Enjoyed our last term's Charlie and Chocolate Factory book too much? Join us in Term 4 as we meet this befuddled but indeed friendly and charming giant- the BFG! This book is another gem in Roald Dahl's book collection and it's about dreaming and storytelling, parenting and childhood, nostalgia and pragmatism, and the necessity of standing up for yourself even when you know you can't win. But most of all, it's a film about two unlikely friends. "This warmhearted tall tale, published a year before Dahl picked up the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, artfully whisks readers away on a magical journey through London, Giant Country and beyond, to a realm of wild imagination." --TIME Magazine NPE's Book clubs create space for children to talk, ask questions, and interact with peers on a level that other reading groups in school or at home often can’t. These discussions are facilitated by NPE Learning Facilitator and presented in a way that is accessible for children and gives them the space to uncover the story independently and as a team. While many children at this age are already reading for pleasure, they typically haven’t started to explore texts fully. In NPE’s weekly book club, we introduce five main story elements such as characters, setting, problems, events, and solutions. However, understanding a book deeply goes beyond identifying these elements. Book clubs delve into themes, characters’ motivations, language features and more so that students both understand an author’s purpose and begin to form their opinions. Literary analysis also expands a child’s ability to state their ideas using new language and develops conversation skills.
