Does your child have a great imagination? Loves stories? Has an inner story just waiting to be let out? Throughout Term 3, this program aims to empower budding writers by providing them with the tools necessary for crafting compelling, imaginative stories. We will take a dive into understanding how to create loveable characters, how to structure a story, how to write evocative descriptions and more! Creative writing not only facilitates an understanding of the fundamentals in storytelling, but also helps to promote children’s creative problem-solving skills by creating obstacles and resolutions for characters, as well as utilising their emotional intelligence in understanding how a character may feel in a situation by using their own or other’s experiences. Children will complete fun in-class activities that engage them in writing, roleplaying and arts, and will complete homework tasks designed to help them practice the topics covered in each class. Ten weeks' Scope and Sequence for Term 3: Week #1: Showing and Telling (Writing description) Week #2: Creating a compelling character Week #3: Point of view (First, second and third person) Week #4: Picking a setting (Choosing where to set your story, and what to think about) Week #5: Story structure (Different types of story structures and how to use them) Week #6: First act (Set-up and inciting incident) Week #7: Second act (Complications and turning point) Week #8: Third act (Includes climax and resolution) Week #9: Dialogue (How to write great dialogue) Week #10: Putting it all together (Looking at what we’ve learnt and how it all comes together) Our students are guided to read, comprehend, analyse, and evaluate texts from classical stories and masterpieces. Students are encouraged to adapt their knowledge to rewrite their favourites or create their own stories after learning from the masters. Students will be assigned a writing challenge each week to apply their learning and sharpen their writing skills. Students will develop personal writing habits and become confident writers through weekly take-home writing tasks and individual feedback from teachers.
