Debate teaches how to persuade, how to present clearly and how to connect with an audience. These skills are exactly what future employers will be looking for in their young employees. That comfort of speaking in front of others is useful in so many aspects of life, from interviews to school presentations to discussions in seminars. Beyond the skills built while students are speaking, the preparation for competition teaches critical thinking and research skills as well. It tests and builds that ability by enabling students to see both sides of the issue. Debaters learn to explain their own ideas, support their ideas with evidence and assess sources and viewpoints. Above all, debating is fun! It gives students a rare opportunity to take ownership of their own intellectual development. A great way of building collaboration and teamwork as well! Come and join our Term 2 Debating Level 2 on Monday 5pm starting from 2 May. Throughout the term, there will be weekly meeting, out of class speech preparation and teacher's individual feedback. The first week will consist of some review content from the last term and allow students to submit topics they would want to debate over the course of the unit. This term we will focus on application of the debating skills learnt in the last term with 4 x 2 week cycles. Each cycle begins with some limited instruction and then time to plan for an in class debate that will take the time of the following week. Meet the NPE Learning Facilitator: Alanna is an experienced teacher specializing in literature and composition. While teaching, she was a National Speech and Debate Association coach that qualified a state team three years in a row as well as qualifying two students to the national competition. She has a bachelor’s in teaching from Indiana University in the United States. Currently, she is pursuing her Master’s in education policy and leadership. Her goal is to support students in becoming lifelong learners by creating engaging and responsive content. She plans lessons that encourage critical thinking and empower students to develop their own voices through writing and speaking.
