Sensational Settings (10-11 Jan, 9:30-10:30am)
In these two one-hour sessions we will explore sensational settings in picture books through hands-on, creative activities. Students will engage in a range of creative activities by choosing their favourite setting from the text ‘Imagine’ by Alison Lester. We will also learn about amazing adjectives along the way, in order to write their own description of a setting that they have created.
Character Creation (17-18 Jan, 9:30-10:30am)
In these two one-hour sessions we will explore the story ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. It begins by stepping students through a series of creative activities to explores the text before creating their own stick man character and a story that takes them on an adventure. What a new adventure would your stick man go through?
Postcard Writing (24-25 Jan, 9:30-10:30am)
Have you ever written on a postcard when you were travelling? In these two one-hour sessions we are learning to write postcards in the appropriate style to describe a place in Australia. We will draw some inspiration and connection from the book “Are we there yet” by Alison Lester.
>>Book Club<<
Would you rather? (12-13 Jan, 9:30-10:30am)
Would you rather your house surrounded by snow, water or a jungle? And what are your reasons? Do the reasons you give support your choice? We will be exploring ‘There’s a Snake in My School’ By David Williams and ‘Which pet should I get’ by Dr Seuss to learn about persuasive language techniques as well as the skills to give reasons for our opinions!
“The Twits" (19-20 Jan, 9:30-10:30am)
In these two one-hour sessions we will explore the two vivid characters Mr and Mrs Twits that Roald Dahl created. What makes them so interesting? What stands out in their minds? We will learn how to use interesting languages to create the image of the character in reader’s mind!

Amazing Adaptation (10-11 Jan, 3:30-4:30pm)
Can you think of any animals which use camouflage to survive? What would make some better at surviving than others? Have you ever wondered why fish can’t live on the land? What would an “optimal” lizard look like? We will be exploring amazing adaptation with variety of creatures and promote science investigation and discussion skills.
The Red Planet (12-13 Jan, 3:30-4:30pm)
If ever people want to live on Mars, they will need to find a way to grow their own food. What conditions are like on Mars and what a seed needs to grow? Students will be exploring the conditions in Mars and encouraged to use recycled materials to create a place where a seed could germinate and grow in a place like Mars.
Green Power (17-18 Jan, 3:30-4:30pm)
Sources of renewable energy are beneficial in helping us act against climate change. In these two one-hour sessions, students will explore different sources of renewable energies such as wind and solar power and they get to create their own wind turbines!
Forensic Science (19-20 Jan, 3:30pm- 4:30pm)
We need a group of junior “forensic scientists” joining us this summer to identify the animal by examining the clues they left: the footprints, the teeth marks, and the eggs! These two sessions will be great for promoting students’ science observation, investigation and reasoning skills.
Design a Perfect Shelter (24-25 Jan, 3:30-4:30pm)
There are so many shelters such as treehouse, an igloo and a camping tent. They are all temporary types of shelter built within an environment from different materials. How would you build a perfect weatherproof shelter for your toy pet? What elements must a shelter have and what materials would you use?

Property Persuasion (10-11 Jan, 10:30am-12pm)
This fun, real-world creative literacy workshop explicitly takes students on a journey, step by step, through the skill of identifying and understanding the purpose of persuasive language in a text. This unit uses real estate property listings as the base text and creates the opportunity for students to market and sell their designed houses using persuasive language.
Critical Literacy – Social Context and Tweet Away! (24-25 Jan, 10:30am-12pm)
In these two critical literacy workshops, we will be looking at the meaning of “social context” and discuss current social issues and learn to adapt texts of picture books to represent the social context in the modern day. Students will also be encouraged to think about one thing they would like to change and use the social platform to write a Tweeter style post to address their issues that they seek to change.
>>Book Club<<
In Book Club we will dive deep into the fascinating world of books, while at the same time sharpen the crucial literary analysis and comprehension skills. Students will be engaged in fun and interactive discussion and debate on the stories and characters, and enhance their literature appreciation.
